Liam Rosenior is far from the only problem at Chelsea and the club's owners should look closer to home when it comes to arresting their current slide. Rosenior took charge in January to replace Enzo Maresca after a brilliant spell at Strasbourg, having guided them to European qualification at the end of last season. He was rewarded with the Blues job on a six-and-a-half-year contract, but things haven't exactly gone to plan.
Results haven't been up to scratch and Rosenior's unorthodox approach to management has raised more than a few eyebrows. His nauseating soundbites, incessant entrepreneur speak and the team's insistence on a bizarre pre-match huddle has led to him being nicknamed 'LinkedIn Liam' in some quarters. More worryingly, he looks totally out of his depth and is working for a club not exactly known for being patient with managers.
As a result, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Rosenior relieved of his duties before the end of the season. However, if Chelsea's owners genuinely believe that getting rid of him will be a one-way ticket to success, they've got another thing coming.
There is a reason why the Blues haven't won anything of note since their Champions League triumph in 2021 (not including the Club World Cup, which nobody rates apart from Chelsea fans) and it's not because of Rosenior.
As the saying goes, a fish rots from the head down and that certainly rings true in this case. Their current owners seemingly have an aversion to making sensible football decisions, which is particularly clear in their approach to player recruitment.
Chelsea have spent more money in the transfer market than any other Premier League club over the last few seasons, but they have very little to show for it.
Only two players who arrived at Stamford Bridge in the summer have proven to be worthy additions. Joao Pedro and Estevao Willian are both fantastic assets who will undoubtedly go on to have great careers at the highest level of the game.
The same cannot be said for Chelsea's other summer signings, with the likes of Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, Liam Delap and Alejandro Garnacho among the expensive flops wasting space in the dressing room.
Their scatter-gun approach to the transfer market simply hasn't worked, yet those in power at Stamford Bridge continue to persist in the hope that if they throw enough money at it, things will eventually come good.
Of course, that isn't going to happen. Another saying goes that insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.
The bottom line is that Chelsea must revise their approach to signing players if they are serious about fighting for trophies that actually matter next season.
Instead of splashing hundreds of millions on countless project players who may or may not provide a return on investment, why not sign four or five with the ability to improve the first-team squad right away?
Rosenior clearly isn't the right man for the job and should go before the start of next season, but that won't be enough to save Chelsea.
Positive change starts from the very top and that will be something for the Blues to consider over the coming months.
