Recently, a sophisticated counterfeiting operation was uncovered in Gujarat. This group was employing artificial intelligence to produce fake currency notes that were nearly indistinguishable from authentic ones, allowing them to circulate widely.

RBI's Alert on Counterfeit Notes

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reported a significant rise in counterfeit currency cases in recent months. Specifically, fake ₹500 notes have been identified in circulation. This situation underscores the importance for individuals to discern whether the money they possess is legitimate or counterfeit.

Methods to Verify Currency Authenticity

Check the Note Against Light

Watermark: To confirm a note's authenticity, hold the blank area of the note up to a light source. A genuine note will reveal an image of Mahatma Gandhi along with the note's denomination.

Security Thread: The shiny green thread embedded in the note should appear as a continuous line when viewed against the light. If it features the words "Bharat" (India) and "RBI," the note is authentic.

Tilt the Note

Color-Shifting Ink: A key characteristic of a genuine note is its color-changing feature. When tilted, the shiny strip in the center shifts from green to blue.

Moreover, the serial number located at the bottom right corner also changes color when the note is tilted.

Feel the Texture

The RBI has designed genuine currency notes with specific embossed features that allow visually impaired individuals to identify them by touch. You can feel the following elements on a legitimate banknote:

• The portrait of Mahatma Gandhi


• The Ashoka Pillar emblem on the left side


• Five slanted lines embossed along the edges


• The Governor's signature and the RBI's Promise Clause

Examine Closely or Use a Magnifying Glass

To verify a genuine banknote, look for the words 'Bharat' (in Hindi) and 'India' inscribed in fine print between Mahatma Gandhi's portrait and the vertical border strip. This can be clearly read by examining closely or with a magnifying lens.
