New Delhi: AIIMS on Tuesday officially confirmed the death of Harish Rana, who had been admitted to the hospital’s palliative care unit after receiving approval for passive euthanasia from the Supreme Court. The hospital confirmed the death through a press release.

Harish Rana, 32, had been in a coma for the past 13 years and was shifted to AIIMS on March 14 to undergo the process of passive euthanasia. The Supreme Court had accepted his parents’ plea for euthanasia on March 11.

Rana had suffered serious brain injuries after falling from the fourth floor of his PG accommodation in 2013. He was an engineering grad at the time of the incident.

A bench of Justices JB Pardiwala and KV Viswanathan delivered the historic decision on March 11, enabling the family to end life support in a hospital setting, allowing Harish Rana to die with dignity.
