Synopsis

United Airlines is introducing "Relax Row" on select international flights starting 2027, allowing economy passengers to convert three seats into a flat bed. This new offering, available on over 200 Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft by 2030, provides an intermediate comfort option between economy and premium economy for those willing to pay extra for enhanced space and amenities.

United Airlines will introduce a new seating option called “Relax Row” that allows economy passengers to convert seats into a flat bed on select international flights starting 2027, as the carrier expands premium offerings within its standard cabin.

The airline said the feature will be available on more than 200 Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft by 2030, with up to 12 such rows installed per plane. The move is aimed at offering more comfort options to passengers willing to pay extra without upgrading to premium cabins.

Seats convert into flat beds

The “Relax Row” consists of a block of three economy seats fitted with adjustable leg rests that can be raised to create a flat surface. The setup is designed to accommodate up to three passengers and can form a bed large enough for two adults and a child.

Passengers booking the option will receive additional amenities, including a mattress pad, blanket, and extra pillows. Families may also be provided with a children’s travel kit.

The seats will be positioned between the standard economy and premium economy sections, offering an intermediate comfort option.

“Customers traveling in United Economy on long-haul flights deserve an option for more space and comfort, and this is one way we can deliver that for them,” Andrew Nocella, the airline’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, said.

Part of broader premium strategy

The introduction of the “Relax Row” comes as airlines focus on passengers seeking additional comfort at lower costs than business class. United reported an increase in premium revenue, reflecting demand for upgraded travel experiences.

The new offering will complement the airline’s existing premium economy product, Premium Plus, which includes reclining seats and upgraded services.
