When the IPL started, Srhane Warne joined Rajasthan Royals not just as a player, but also as captain, coach, and team builder. Instead of only taking a bigger salary, he added a special clause in his deal. He got 0.75% ownership of the team for each season he played. Over four seasons, that became 3% ownership.
At that time, the franchise itself was not worth much. In 2008, RR was valued around $67 million, so his stake was only worth a few million dollars. But Warne believed the IPL would grow a lot in the future, and he chose to invest in that growth.
That decision paid off big in 2026. The team was sold for about $1.63 billion (around ₹15,300 crore). Because of that, Warne’s 3% stake is now worth around ₹460 crore. What looked small earlier became a massive amount over time.
Warne passed away in 2022, but this money goes to his family. His three children, Brooke Warne, Jackson Warne, and Summer Warne, each receive a major share of his estate.
Rajasthan Royals have been sold for about ₹15,290 crore (around $1.63 billion). The deal is led by Kal Somani, an Indian-origin businessman based in the US.
Kal Somani is a tech entrepreneur who started companies like IntraEdge, Truyo, Truyo.AI, and Academian. His work is mainly in areas like data privacy, AI, and education technology. He moved to the US in 1998 after studying electronics and telecom in India and built multiple businesses over time.
He was already connected to RR before this deal. In 2021, he invested in the franchise as a minority stakeholder and said he saw big future growth in the IPL. Now, he is leading a group to take full control of the team.
His group is not alone. It includes Rob Walton from the Walmart family and members of the Hamp family, who are linked to Ford and own the Detroit Lions.
The deal still needs approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India. If approved, it will take effect after IPL 2026, and the current management will continue until then. Right now, the franchise is mainly owned by Manoj Badale, who holds a 65% stake.
Somani has also been active in sports outside cricket. He is linked with Motor City Golf Club and has invested in TMRW Sports and the TGL Golf League.
The 2008 IPL season is remembered because Shane Warne took a weak-looking team and turned it into champions. RR were the cheapest team and had very few big names. Most people expected them to struggle.
Warne was not just captain. He also acted like coach, mentor, and talent scout. He worked closely with young Indian players, even trying to speak Hindi with them to build trust. He believed the team could win from any situation, and that mindset showed in their games.
During the league stage, RE dominated. They won 11 out of 14 matches and finished at the top. Sohail Tanvir led the bowling with 22 wickets, including a famous 6/14 spell. Warne himself took 19 wickets, showing he was still effective.
The final was against Chennai Super Kings, led by MS Dhoni. In the last over, RR needed 8 runs. The match went to the final ball, where Tanvir hit the winning shot, giving Rajasthan a three-wicket win. Pathan was named Man of the Match, while Watson was Player of the Tournament. The team showed that strong leadership and belief can beat bigger and stronger teams.
