The administration under Donald Trump has initiated fresh inquiries into the role of race in medical school admissions at three prominent U.S. universities. The U.S. Department of Justice announced these investigations on Wednesday, targeting the medical schools at Stanford University, Ohio State University, and the University of California San Diego, as reported by a leading news outlet. Harmeet Dhillon made the announcement regarding these inquiries.

The purpose of these investigations is to assess whether these institutions have incorporated race into their admissions processes in a manner that contravenes legal standards. This action follows a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that prohibited affirmative action in college admissions, stating that race cannot be a direct factor in admission decisions. However, the court did permit schools to consider how a student's life experiences, including those related to race, may have influenced their personal essays.

The Trump administration has expressed concerns that universities might still be employing indirect methods to factor in race. Officials suspect that personal essays or other details could serve as proxies for race-based admissions decisions. The investigations will seek to uncover if such practices are present at the targeted medical schools.

In a correspondence sent to Ohio State, Dhillon requested documents pertaining to the use of race in admissions. The department also sought comprehensive data on applicants, including test scores, racial or ethnic backgrounds, and admission outcomes dating back to 2019.

The universities involved have stated their willingness to cooperate with the investigation while asserting their compliance with the law. A representative from Ohio State confirmed receipt of the letter and indicated that the university adheres to all applicable state and federal regulations. The University of California San Diego mentioned that it is currently reviewing the notice from the Justice Department, emphasizing its commitment to fair and lawful admissions processes.

Stanford School of Medicine also acknowledged that it is assessing the request, with a spokesperson affirming that the institution does not tolerate unlawful discrimination based on race or any other protected category.

The rationale behind the selection of these three universities for investigation remains unclear. This initiative is part of a larger strategy by the Trump administration to enhance oversight of higher education institutions, which has frequently been accused of political bias and inequitable admissions practices.

The matter has also resurfaced in the courts, as a coalition of 17 Democratic state attorneys general has filed a lawsuit against a federal policy mandating colleges to gather and disclose admissions data related to race. A federal judge in Massachusetts is currently deliberating whether to block this policy.
