LeBron to Bronny Assist Makes NBA Father-Son History/ TezzBuzz/ WASHINGTON/ J. Mansour/ Morning Edition/ LeBron James assisted Bronny James for a historic 3-pointer during the Lakers’ win over Brooklyn. The play marked the NBA’s first father-son assist in league history. The milestone highlighted Bronny’s growing role and a unique family moment.
LOS ANGELES — LeBron James delivered a historic moment Friday night, passing to his son Bronny James for a 3-pointer that marked the first father-son assist in NBA history.
The milestone came during the second quarter of the Los Angeles Lakers’ 116-99 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. It was another memorable chapter for the league’s first father-son duo playing together on the same team.
Bronny checked into the game alongside his father at the start of the second quarter, and the two shared the court for nearly four and a half minutes. During that stretch, both players contributed offensively, culminating in the historic assist.
LeBron first scored on a driving layup before finding Bronny on the next possession. After receiving the pass, Bronny faked a pass to the corner and knocked down a 3-pointer from just behind the line.
LeBron also reflected on the significance of the moment.
LeBron explained he drew a double team before moving the ball to his son.
The game marked the second straight contest in which Bronny received meaningful playing time. His increased role comes as the Lakers deal with injuries, including starting guard Marcus Smart being sidelined.
Bronny has spent much of his second NBA season playing limited minutes while also gaining experience in the G League. However, the recent opportunities have allowed him to develop confidence and rhythm.
LeBron credited Bronny’s improvement to regained strength and confidence following a serious health scare in 2023.
Bronny suffered cardiac arrest during a University of Southern California practice, which temporarily derailed his development. LeBron said his son is now returning to form.
LeBron and Bronny already made history as the first father and son to play together in the NBA. Friday’s assist added another unprecedented milestone.
The moment also sparked a lighthearted exchange after the game. Bronny recalled a one-on-one game at their Miami home.
Teammate Austin Reaves jokingly asked if that happened because Bronny won. Bronny nodded, and Reaves responded: “Don’t leave that out!”
The historic assist comes during another milestone-filled season for LeBron. Earlier this month, he set the NBA career record for games played.
Meanwhile, Bronny continues adjusting to life in the NBA and learning alongside his father.
With both players continuing to share the court, more historic moments may be ahead for one of basketball’s most unique family partnerships.
