Brits are being offered thechance to swap grey skies for Mediterranean sunshine, as part of Sardinia's launch schemes topay people to relocate to their quieter villages. The initiative is designed to breathe new life into rural communities that have seen their populations steadily decline, as younger residents move to cities for work while older generations remain.
Promoting the opportunity on social media, TikTok user @hahoangquoc2 described the move as a "no brainer", telling viewers: "Move to paradise? Sardinia will pay you €15,000! Is it too good to be true?"
The scheme is open to anyone willing to register as a resident in a small town on the island, provided it has fewer than 3,000 inhabitants.
To support the move, local authorities are offering a non-repayable grant of up to €15,000 (around £13,000) per household.
The funding is intended to help cover the cost of buying or renovating a property, although it will not exceed 50% of the total value.
Applicants must commit to relocating within 18 months of purchasing a home or completing renovation work, with the aim of encouraging long-term settlement rather than short-term stays.
As well as the upfront grant, there are additional incentives for those looking to put down roots and start a family.
Couples can receive monthly payments of around €600 (£500) for their first child, and €400 (£350) for a second child until they reach the age of five.
Officials say the scheme is part of a wider effort to strengthen struggling communities and revive local economies.
Speaking about the initiative, the president of Sardinia said: “We have created the conditions for young people to decide to stay and develop the economic fabric of the most fragile territories.
“Thanks to the contributions to their first homes, this is strengthened and becomes fertile ground for those who will move there or decide to build a family.”
A statement from regional authorities added that a €45 million budget has been set aside to support the programme, which forms part of a long-term strategy to reverse depopulation in rural areas.
However, there is a catch. The grant only applies to properties in smaller municipalities, and those already living in similar towns on the island are not eligible to apply.
Despite this, the prospect of financial support, a slower pace of life, and year-round sunshine has already caught the attention of many would-be expats online - with some saying the opportunity is too good to ignore.
