Tezzbuzz Desk- Mumbai Indians finally ended their long-standing losing streak by starting their new season with a win. In its first match of IPL 2026, the team started the campaign in great style by defeating Kolkata Knight Riders by 6 wickets. In this high-scoring match played at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai created history by achieving the huge target of 221 runs in the last over. This also proved to be the team’s biggest successful run chase in IPL history.
After losing the toss, Kolkata team came to bat first and scored a strong score of 220 runs at the loss of 4 wickets in 20 overs. Captain Ajinkya Rahane batted aggressively and scored 67 runs, while Finn Allen played a quick inning of 37 runs. There was a partnership of 69 runs between the two for the first wicket. After this, young batsman Angkrish Raghuvanshi also made an important contribution in taking the team to a big score by scoring 51 runs. Shardul Thakur was the most successful in bowling for Mumbai, who took 3 wickets.
The start of Mumbai Indians chasing the target was also very explosive. The opening pair of Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickleton put pressure on the Kolkata bowlers. Both the batsmen scored runs quickly and put the team in a strong position. Rohit scored 78 runs, while Rickleton played a brilliant inning of 81 runs. Together they made a partnership of 148 runs in just 11.5 overs, which completely turned the match towards Mumbai.
Although both the batsmen missed their respective centuries, by then the victory was almost certain. In the end Mumbai achieved the target in 19.1 overs and won the match.
With this victory, Mumbai Indians made another record in their name. The team successfully chased its biggest target in the history of IPL. Moreover, this is the first time in 14 years that Mumbai has won the first match of the season. Earlier, the team had won its first match in 2012, after which it had to face defeat in the opening match for 13 consecutive seasons.
