Salad Benefits: As soon as summer starts, we increase the amount of salad in our diet. A salad plate adorned with cucumber, tomato, cucumber and onion not only looks good but is also a great source of fiber, minerals and vitamins.
But do you know that the way you eat the salad that you eat with great gusto can cause harm to your health instead of benefits. Ayurveda has prescribed a special time and method of consuming food, if not followed, the nutrients in salad are almost lost.
Often people sprinkle salt, lemon, chaat masala or Maggi masala on top of the salad to enhance the taste. According to Ayurveda, this habit takes away the real nutrition of salad. When you add these things to salad, the essential vitamins and minerals present in it get reduced and your body gets only fiber.
Apart from this, adding spices and salt separately increases the amount of sodium in the body unnecessarily because we are already taking salt in pulses and vegetables. This excess sodium can prove harmful for health.
In Indian homes it is customary to serve salad with the main meal. However, Ayurveda considers this method wrong. Salad should not be eaten with food but at least 1 hour before food. By doing this, not only does the body get complete nutrition from the salad but it also helps in increasing your appetite.
Some people experience digestive problems or heaviness after eating raw salad. For such people, Ayurveda suggests that they should cook the salad lightly with the help of steam. Keep in mind that salad should not be boiled in water but a steamer should be used so that its nutrients remain intact and it can be easily digested. For taste, using black pepper or green chilli instead of salt is a better option.
To make the salad more beneficial, include green coriander and raw coconut in it. Raw coconut and coriander increase its nutritional properties manifold. It has always been considered best to eat salad in its simple and natural form by cutting it into small pieces.
If salad is consumed in the right way and at the right time, it works wonders in controlling weight. It not only keeps the digestive system healthy but also plays an important role in improving eyesight and keeping the heart healthy. Therefore, next time before eating salad, remember these rules of Ayurveda.
