The 2022 sequel to an iconic horror franchise starring Jenna Ortega is coming to Netflix soon. The film introduces new characters and takes place more than two decades after the events of the original film, bringing back some of the cast who helped make the franchise a cultural phenomenon.

Scream begins streaming on Netflix in April

Scream (2022) will arrive on Netflix on Friday, April 10, 2026. While it serves as a follow-up to Scream 4 (2011), it also features characters from the original Scream (1996).

The 2022 film takes place 11 years after Scream 4. It follows Sam Carpenter, who returns to Woodsboro after learning that her younger sister, Tara, was attacked by Ghostface. Eventually, Sams reveals that she is the daughter of Billy Loomis, the original Woodsboro killer. As more killings take place, Sam, Tara, and her friends team up with Sidney Prescott, Gale Weathers, and Dewey Riley to uncover the identity of the new Ghostface.

The cast features Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Jack Quaid, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, and Jasmin Savoy Brown, among others.

Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the film with a script by James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick. Wes Craven, the director of the first four films, was reportedly signed on to direct the fifth. Following Craven’s death in 2015 and the Weinstein Company’s shutdown, Spyglass Media Group acquired the film’s rights in 2019.

The film debuted in theaters on January 14, 2022, and opened to positive reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes300 critics gave it an approval rating of 76%, while over 2,500 users gave it 82%. Meanwhile, on Metacriticit showcases an average critic score of 60 and a user score of 6.7. Furthermore, Scream experienced an extremely good run at the box office. Made on a reported budget of $24 millionit went on to earn $137.7 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo).

The film was followed by a direct sequel, Scream VI, which was released in March 2023. It received a more favorable reception and even performed better at the box office.
