Indian broadcasting company Jiostar has suddenly terminated its broadcasting agreement in Bangladesh, due to which live telecast of this season’s matches is no longer possible there. This decision has been taken at a time when there were indications of relaxation in the restrictions imposed earlier by the Bangladesh government.

This development has given a big shock to the cricket lovers of Bangladesh. The popularity of IPL is very high in the country. Lakhs of spectators eagerly wait for this tournament every year, but this time they will not get a chance to watch the live match on TV.

In fact, JioStar terminated its sub-license agreement with Bangladesh’s local broadcaster TSports with immediate effect. TSports had the broadcast rights of IPL from 2023 to 2027. However, this partnership broke due to the company not making timely payments and repeated payment defaults. JioStar clarified that this step had to be taken due to non-compliance of contract terms. This decision will apply not only to IPL but also to the Women’s Premier League.

Although there has been some tension between India and Bangladesh on cricket- issues in recent months, the matter is being considered primarily a commercial dispute. According to experts, this agreement was broken not due to political reasons but due to economic differences. Continuous delay in payment was the biggest reason for this dispute.

Meanwhile, the Bangladesh government had earlier indicated that it may review the old ban on IPL telecast. But now, when the agreement between JioStar and TSports has ended, there is currently no official partner to broadcast this tournament in the country.
