A drink-driver who was travelling more than twice the speed limit has been jailed after causing the deaths of two men in their 50s. Isidoro Olim, 35, struck the side of the victims' vehicle at around midnight on October 29, 2022, while he was travelling at 65mph in a 30mph zone, after braking from initial speeds of 77mph.
The victim's Skoda had been pulling out of a driveway along City Way in Rochester when Olim, who had been consuming alcohol that evening, hit the side of the vehicle in his BMW 118i. Two occupants of the Skoda, both men in their 50s, died at the scene while two other casualties in the car were taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Olim was arrested at the scene and initially tried to claim his partner was driving. Giving 'no comment' answers at his first interview, he admitted in an interview three months later that it was in fact him behind the wheel.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Hannah Mungeam said he had shown a "complete lack of remorse".
She said: "Olim's reckless decision to drive having consumed alcohol and above the speed limit has resulted in two families suffering the immeasurable loss of their loved ones.
"His initial attempt to deny being the driver, and his willingness to shift the blame onto his partner, demonstrated a complete lack of remorse and an unwillingness to accept responsibility for the devastation he caused.
"However, the weight of the evidence against him left him with no choice but to admit the offences."
During the investigation, analysis showed Olim, of Berkeley Close, Rochester, would have been able to stop in time had he been driving at the 30mph speed limit.
He was charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, two of causing serious injury by driving dangerously and one charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Olim denied the driving offences at a Maidstone Crown Court hearing but admitted to attempting to pervert the course of justice.
At the same court on March 9, 2026, he changed his plea to guilty and was sentenced to 17 years and two months in prison on March 30.
His partner, Isabel Nunes, was also sentenced to 20 months in prison for attempting to pervert the course of justice by feigning injury and deleting her phone call history.
DC Mungeam added: "I hope this sentence offers some measure of closure to the families and supports them as they continue the difficult process of rebuilding their lives."
