After a frightening incident during Punjab Kings’ IPL 2026 clash against the Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh, captain Shreyas Iyer provided a significant update regarding his injury. The incident occurred during the second innings while PBKS were in the chase and led to much concern in the dugout.

The aforementioned scare happened in the 12th over while bowling. Cooper Connolly hit a massive shot from Rashid Khan directly onto Iyer, who was on the non-striker's end and had very little time to react. He immediately fell down clutching his wrist, leaving the team in a worried state.

A Painful Blow Worry PBKS Camp During Chase

The entire Punjab Kings camp seemed worried as Iyer is an integral part of the squad, not just as a batsman but also as captain. The coach Ricky Ponting looked concerned as physios rushed onto the field to treat him.

Despite his discomfort, Iyer displayed a brave front to carry on batting, however, the stroke to the wrist took a toll as he could not stay longer and got dismissed on the very next ball that he faced, which added more pressure onto the chase of the Punjab Kings.

The incident was widely spoken about, as it came at a very critical juncture of the match and losing their skipper could have swung the game completely into Gujarat Titans’ favour.

Iyer Provides an Update and Praises Connolly

The captain provided some clarity on his situation post the match and appeared quite positive.

He said:

"All I can say is nice. It’s the same as it was before. I don’t want to jinx anything. I just want to stay positive, and hopefully everything comes all right."

This update will be a huge sigh of relief for the Punjab Kings' supporters, as their skipper is one of the most crucial players for their success, and not having him at the crease or leading them would be detrimental.

Apart from the injury concern, Iyer had high praise for debutant Cooper Connolly, who played an extraordinary game for the Punjab Kings. He smashed a phenomenal and unbeaten 72 off 44 balls which guided his team to a close three-wicket victory.

He added:

“Some of the shots he played was surreal to watch, especially the backfoot six off Rashid, one of the best bowlers in the IPL. To hit him so clearly and neatly, it was simply phenomenal. He has got a great mindset as well. I have seen him in the past and hope he continues his form."

It was Connolly’s heroics which helped Punjab Kings in reaching the target of 163 although they had lost a few wickets at crucial moments in the middle of the innings. PBKS achieved their first win of the season and all eyes are now fixed on Shreyas Iyer’s fitness.
