Sometimes it can be a nightmare to find somewhere to park, and deciding to pull up outside a neighbour's house can lead to all sorts of problems. One man recently discovered this when he opted to leave his car outside his neighbour's property for 11 days, as it led to a pretty big parking row.

The man, who felt like he did nothing wrong, told the story on Reddit, as matters appeared to spiral out of control. When he returned to his car, a note was left on his windscreen from the neighbour, and it's clear his decision caused a lot of upset.

In the post, it was explained the neighbour claims he "owns a street parking spot" and alleges he called the police about the matter too. It's not the first time someone has caused upset by parking in front of their neighbour's home either.

The man, from Scotland, said: "Hi all, I’d appreciate some advice on a situation. I parked my car on a residential street I live across from.

"There were no yellow signs, no permit lines, not blocking any driveway. The car was left there for 11 days while I was away.

"When I came back, I found this note on my car and, as I was driving away, the person who left the note came out and kept saying 'never do this again'. I told him I was parked legally, but he kept repeating that he didn’t care and told me to 'never do that again'. The interaction felt uncomfortable and quite intimidating.

"I’m trying to understand if I’ve actually done anything wrong here legally. Also, even if I’m not at fault, is there an expectation or etiquette not to park outside someone’s house if it’s the only available space?

"Also, is there any risk of me getting into legal trouble for this situation (as he mentioned contacting the police and claimed they told him I live nearby)? Thanks in advance."

A picture of the note was also shared, and the neighbour deemed him an "inconsiderate driver". He also made claims he parked in a "private street" that's owned by residents, which stops people from parking there.

The man was alleged to have not considered the homeowners, which the neighbour claims caused them "stress and inconvenience." Despite this, the man who parked the car said there were "no signs" to suggest this was the case.

The situation got a lot of people talking, as hundreds commented on the post. They offered all sorts of ideas.

One said: "I work in highways and deal with this stuff all the time. The road being unadopted simply means that the local highway authority doesn't maintain it.

"It could mean that another department within the council owns it. House title deeds DO show the boundary going into the road, however this does NOT mean that they 'own' the road.

"They typically own the earth underneath the road. There is usually still a public right of way and, unless the guy can prove that there is no public right of way or a parking restriction, you're free to park wherever."

Another added: "I'll second this. I worked in housing and many of the estate roads were owned and maintained by the Housing Revenue. Account rather than Highways.

"Your average Joe wouldn't have seen any difference between the two and used them accordingly." A third replied: "Maybe they were annoyed you left your vehicle there for 11 days."

Meanwhile, a fourth commented: "He couldn’t do anything about it for 11 days except leave a note. If he had any powers, he would have done something about it sooner for sure."

One more also noted: "Whether you've done something illegal or not, I doubt the police would prosecute. However, if you don't even live down that road, it's a little inconsiderate to leave your car outside someone's house for 11 days straight."
