As IPL 2026 comes to a close, national teams gear up for a long summer of cricket. After the league comes to an end, players would compete to secure their place in national teams, and cricket boards and selectors will finalize contracts and team composition for the coming months.
Cricket Australia (CA) revealed the names of the 21 centrally contracted players for 2026-27. The list received attention for some unexpected names that were missed out, like experienced all-rounder Glenn Maxwell and youngster Sam Konstas.
Explaining the reason for the list selection, Chief Selector CA George Bailey said:
"The next 12 months include a large amount of Test cricket across a range of conditions and a variety of challenges. The contract list is indicative of the selection committee and board's focus on this period and is weighted towards Test and multi-format cricketers for this cycle. While a number of the contracted players are being managed through series in preparation for major Test series, we will continue to utilize and need players outside this group throughout the schedule".

The role of Glenn Maxwell
Glenn Maxwell has been a dominant force for the Australian white-ball teams and has scored 6500+ runs across 270+ international matches ever since his debut in 2012. While his Test experience consists of only 7 games and with the focus being on workload management for long-term players, his omission comes as a reflection of the ongoing transition.
With him already in his late thirties and having recently retired from ODIs, with poor returns in T20 World Cup 2026, his place in the setup is in doubt. Many believe that it's time to close the book on the Glenn Maxwell white-ball story for Australia.
Konstas has time on his side
However, Sam Konstas has not made the cut on form rather than his age. Who was believed to be a long-term prospect for Australia in the batting department, has struggled to maintain good form recently, scoring just 163 runs in 10 innings, after a promising start which included a debut half-century against India.
While not making the senior white-ball setup yet, Konstas has enough time in domestic cricket to rebuild his form. A stellar season of domestic cricket could put him back in contention in no time.
The speed of modern cricket can signal the end for some but can bring new beginnings for those who are ready to work their way back in.
