Channel 5 has confirmed the comeback of its compelling docuseries The Accused following a nearly decade-long break.

The Accused: Guilty or Innocent? originally debuted in 2017 and documented riveting stories from America. It spanned seven series and over 60 episodes and has proven to be a huge hit on 5's streaming platform.

Now, the revival, from Brinkworth Productions, will focus on UK stories, with each episode chronicling the accounts of individuals at the most crucial and frightening moment of their lives.

With extraordinary access to the legal defence team and the accused - from charge to verdict - it exposes the genuine inside story of what occurs when you are charged with a serious crime.

Viewers will witness the raw, emotional reality of the defendant's life. Beyond capturing the legal process from the inside in real time, we see jobs lost, reputations destroyed, communities turn hostile and relationships reach breaking point from the strain of being accused, reports the Mirror.

Filmed from the defendant's point of view, The Accused shows someone, with no previous criminal record, face the full force of the justice system and their fight against a devastating accusation.

The Accused is presently in production and will be filmed over an 18-month period as it tracks selected cases through the courts. Upon recommissioning the series, Guy Davies, Consultant Editor for Commissioning, 5, stated: "The Accused films were groundbreaking hits and critical wins for us. It's a title strongly associated with 5 in the UK and we're thrilled it's returning bigger than ever."

Meanwhile, Malcolm Brinkworth, CEO of Brinkworth Productions, commented: "Brinkworth made two pioneering 90' Specials of The Accused in the UK for 5. Highly acclaimed, the series went on to become a major success in the United States and across the globe.

"A&E Networks commissioned multiple series, with the show becoming the No 1 true crime show on US Cable network. Now we're eager to bring the series back to its original home on 5 with this multipart commission."

When the programme first graced our TV screens nearly a decade ago, viewers tracked the narrative of a mother accused of child abuse in the lead-up to trial.

In a first for British TV, cameras were granted unique access to a woman's child cruelty court case. At that time, 23 year old Kenzey and her boyfriend Kyle were accused of being complicit in inflicting injuries on her seven-week old daughter so severe that the baby was left blind and severely brain damaged.

Kenzey waited over 18 months for her fate to be determined, she was subsequently found guilty of causing or allowing serious injury to a child by failing to protect her daughter from Kitchen, and was sentenced to three-and-a-half years in custody.

Meanwhile, Kyle was initially imprisoned in 2016 for 18 years for grievous bodily harm. He was subsequently found guilty of murdering Primrose on March 12, 2025, after she died in 2021 at age six due to her injuries.

The Accused will be available to watch on Channel 5
