England's Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell evade sanctions for nightclub incident

England white-ball captain Harry Brook and all-rounder Jacob Bethell have been issued a warning by the independent Cricket Regulator.

The independent body responsible for upholding the professional standards in English cricket warned them for an incident relating to an altercation with a nightclub bouncer in New Zealand last year.

The incident came to light after England's Ashes tour in Australia, when Brook claimed he was alone after being denied entry to a Wellington nightclub.

What happened at the nightclub

On the eve of the Wellington ODI, Brook was reportedly out with his teammates.

"The 26-year-old was refused entry to a nightclub because security suspected he was drunk. Brook became embroiled in a row with a bouncer and was struck, although he did not suffer any injury," The Telegraph's Nick Hoult and Will Macpherson reported.

Brook later issued an apology for the altercation.

Incident details

Months after the incident, Brook admitted he wasn't alone during the altercation. He said Bethell and pacer Josh Tongue were also present.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) fined Brook £30,000 and issued a final warning.

Despite the incident, both players participated in an ODI against New Zealand on November 2 last year.

England lost that match by two wickets but completed a 3-0 series whitewash overall.

Conduct regulations

The ECB had already issued a final warning to Brook for his conduct. He publicly apologized, saying fans had "every right to be annoyed" with him.

The independent Cricket Regulator took over the case from the ECB and issued caution notices over Regulation 3.2 of the board's Professional Conduct rules.

This regulation prohibits any behavior that is improper or prejudicial to cricket's interests, or could bring disrepute upon the ECB, cricket itself, or individual cricketers/groups.

ECB retain McCullum and Key despite Ashes defeat
Leadership retention

Despite a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, the ECB has decided to retain head coach Brendon McCullum and managing director Rob Key after a review.

"I've seen the driving ambition and determination that we're lucky enough to have within our leadership group to take the lessons from the Ashes and move forward," said ECB chief executive Richard Gould.

McCullum's contract runs until the end of the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
