New Delhi: OpenAI is preparing to introduce a new foundational AI model called ‘Spud’, according to its president Greg Brockman. The next model is defined as the culmination of close to two years of intense research and development, which is a great step in the company history of the future ChatGPT systems. Spud will be a base model, unlike regular upgrades, which will be developed on top.
In the Big Technology Podcast, Brockman pointed out that Spud is not only an incremental improvement but also a significant change to how OpenAI thinks about model development. He stated that the model is a combination of the long-term research endeavours into one system that aims at improving the performance and usability. The comments follow the previous reports that OpenAI is about to make an AI announcement in the next few weeks.
Spud was not a mere upgrade, as Brockman referred to it as a new pre-train and a system of foundations. The model, he says, will have what he referred to as a big model feel, i.e., it will be more obviously competent, responsive and intuitive. According to him, users will enjoy fewer constraints, and the AI will understand instructions more accurately and deal with more complex and nuanced tasks more efficiently.
Reports from The Information also suggest that Sam Altman has internally highlighted Spud’s potential to significantly boost productivity and even accelerate economic activity. Though OpenAI has not released benchmarks and a launch date, it is believed that the model will push the limits of the existing AI functionality.
In the podcast, Brockman mentioned that Spud is meant to be able to solve more difficult problems and lessen friction during daily uses of AI. The activities that used to be frustrating or untrustworthy might become regular and smooth, and AI tools more naturally incorporated into the workflow. He alluded that users can start to trust AI in doing things that they would have avoided at all costs.
It seems to be more about the contextual insights and enhanced flexibility. According to Brockman, the model will be more willing to bend to the intent of the user, which is a higher level of human-AI system interaction.
Brockman restated the long-term goal of OpenAI to reach artificial general intelligence (AGI), as well. He said that the company can now see a better line of sight to AGI, which may come within a few years. In his view, early versions can still be uneven but will dramatically increase what AI can be capable of in the intellectual tasks.
His remarks support the current work of OpenAI to evolve beyond the narrow AI tools into systems capable of executing a broad spectrum of cognitive processes. Since Spud was already introduced as a baseline model, it may be instrumental in the development of the next generation of AI technologies.
