Manchester United have been told that both the referee and video assistant referee (VAR) were right to wave away Amad's controversial penalty appeal in their draw at Bournemouth last month.

The Premier League's Key Match Incidents (KMI) Panel has ruled on the decision, which left the United players and Michael Carrick stunned, and believes that the officials made the right call.

Amad went down inside the area after Bournemouth's Adrien Truffert appeared to place two hands on him. Referee Stuart Attwell waved away the penalty appeals - with the visitor's anger only increasing when the Cherries went up the other end and scored through Ryan Christie in the 67th minute.

United's frustration peaked as Matheus Cunha was given a penalty, which was then converted, for a challenge that looked extremely similar to the one Amad was on the receiving end of. The Red Devils made a formal complaint to the Premier League regarding the decision.

Since then the KMI Panel produced a split 3:2 vote against a spot-kick being awarded on the field. It was claimed that "whilst Truffert runs a risk, the contact made was not impactful and therefore below the high threshold for a foul". However two panellists said the action was "non-footballing" with a penalty the right call.

Despite those opinions the KMI Panel unanimously supported the VAR staying out of the situation, stating that it was "in keeping with the high threshold for VAR overturns".

United would concede a late equaliser from the spot, which only added to Carrick's frustrations. He told Sky Sports: "We should have had another penalty. Obviously, if you get one, you must get the other. It's pretty much identical for me, two-hand grab. Either way, [the ref] got one wrong, but to give one and not give the other, I can't get my head around it. I think it's crazy. It's a bit baffling, really.

"Because of that, they score and then it's chaos after that, really. We should have had another penalty and the game would have been totally different."

Bruno Fernandes echoed that sentiment as he said: "We get a penalty against [us] where more or less it's the same situation as Amad. One is rewarded as a penalty, the other one not. I know it's difficult for the referee to give two penalties in the same game for the same team but what I don't understand is why VAR doesn't get involved in that situation.

"Either one is a penalty and the other one too or none of them is a penalty."
