Lucknow Super Giants clashed against Delhi Capitals in the 5th match of the IPL 2026 on Wednesday and suffered a tragic loss by 6 wickets at their home ground in Lucknow–also becoming the first home team of IPL 2026 to lose their match. It was a low-scoring thriller where the Delhi Capitals didn’t lose their calm and sealed the match in 17.1 overs. Thanks to the fighting knocks from the Impact Player Sameer Rizvi (70*) and Tristan Stubbs (39*). However, a major part of the credit goes to the DC bowlers who kept bowling in the good areas and didn’t let the home team take an early advantage.
But the question arises, how did Lucknow Super Giants bottle this game despite having one of the most formidable lineups for the IPL 2026? The most obvious answer would be their batting approach and bowling rotations. While there is no doubt about Rishabh Pant’s leadership skills, he was extremely poor with his decision-making from the start of the LSG’s batting innings.
Change in Batting Approach
Lucknow Super Giants used Aiden Markram and Mitchell Marsh as their two prominent openers in their previous edition in IPL 2025, which proved to be one of their major reasons why they got an early aggressive start. Undoubtedly, Markram and Marsh are two of the most aggressive players in this format, who are capable of giving the team a solid start. But LSG started with Rishab Pant and Mitchell Marsh as their new opening pair in the season opener against the Delhi Capitals, which eventually backfired.
Pant, who is naturally a player who takes his time to settle at the crease, will be rarely seen opening the innings with this approach. He was dismissed for 7 off 9 balls, when the score was 19 in 3 overs. Half of the powerplay overs were gone, meaning that LSG failed to utilise their power and allowed Delhi Capitals’ bowlers to remain in the game. Markram came to bat at number 3, and Pooran came to bat at 5. However, both failed to make a mark in the season opener, but a change in order means their batting approach would have changed already.

Pooran is a naturally aggressive hitter who needs time to settle down at the crease and plan his strategies. He is not someone who will give the team plenty of sixes from the first ball. The ideal position to bat for this batter should be either three or four. Similarly, Markram, who is a brilliant player of the new ball, should be given good hours in the powerplay for striking rather than sending him in the middle overs.
Let’s say if the team management decides to give Pooran number 4, then Pant can take charge at three, and Markram goes back to the opening slot. If LSG continued with their previously used batting approach, there is a high chance that they would collapse again.
Bowlers were good in the opening match, especially how the trio of Mohammed Shami, Prince Yadav, and Mohsin Khan delivered with their performances. LSG will need to think about their batting approach and find the right balance before the tournament slips away.
