Hyderabad: The deity didn’t ask for it, nor did the Adivasis. But it changed the life of a priest’s family forever. Call it a mishap or neglect, the damage it has done is irreversible.

The incident in question is about a tribal child who lost his left leg and got a metal implant in his right leg, after one of the newly-constructed structures around the altars of Sammakka and Saralamma in Medaram village collapsed on him on March 25.

The incident happened after the annual Sammakka Saralamma Jatara that was held in Mulugu district from January 28 to 31.

Siddaboina Yuvan, aged six, the son of Siddaboina Rana Ramesh, the chief priest, was playing near the altars after returning from school on the unfateful day, while his parents were performing their divine duties at the temple.

The newly-constructed cement structures that were built around one of the two main altars collapsed on Yuvan, rendering him severely injured. For the past few days, he was being treated at the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital in Hanamkonda.

However, his injuries left him permanently disabled, as the doctors had to amputate his left leg as it was severely infected and couldn’t be recovered. His right leg was saved, but only by placing an implant.

Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leaders blamed the quality of work and corruption in the contracts for the work worth Rs 236 crore, which allegedly led to the collapse of the concrete.
