For many Indian tech professionals, the dream of working abroad often comes wrapped in questions about money, lifestyle, and whether the move truly pays off. A recent conversation featuring an Indian software engineer at Amazon’s Dublin office offers a rare, unfiltered look into that reality. From a six-figure salary in euros to steep monthly expenses and disciplined savings, his experience paints a detailed picture of what life in a global tech hub actually looks like beyond the headlines.

In a conversation with content creator Umang Chaudhary, the engineer shared details about his role, explaining that he works as a software development engineer at Amazon’s Dublin office. The discussion soon turned to compensation, where he revealed that his annual salary falls between 70,000 to 90,000 euros, which roughly converts to ₹75 lakh to ₹96 lakh.

While the headline salary may seem impressive, the cost of living in Dublin adds another layer to the equation. The engineer shared that his monthly expenses are around €3,000, or approximately ₹3.2 lakh. Even with these high living costs, he manages to save about 30 to 40 per cent during good months, highlighting how budgeting and financial discipline play a key role in sustaining a comfortable life abroad.

His financial breakdown reflects a broader reality faced by many professionals working overseas. Higher salaries often come with proportionally higher expenses, especially in cities known for their thriving tech ecosystems. The ability to save a significant portion of income, despite these costs, suggests that while the move may not be as lucrative as it appears at first glance, it still offers meaningful financial growth when managed well.

Beyond finances, the conversation also touched upon lifestyle and quality of life. Comparing Dublin with Seattle, another major tech hub, the engineer described Dublin as a more peaceful city with a welcoming environment and friendly people. This perspective adds an important dimension to the relocation decision, showing that factors like work-life balance, pace of life, and overall environment can be just as influential as salary when choosing where to live and work.
