Punjab Kings won the toss and chose to bowl first against Chennai Super Kings at Chepauk. CSK batted first and achieved a strong total of 209 runs. Shreyas Iyer the PBKS captain showed visible signs of frustration because the Super Kings accumulated their large score.

CSK lost an early wicket but Ayush Mhatre scored 73 runs to establish a strong batting foundation. Sarfaraz Khan and Shivam Dube contributed important runs to help CSK reach their 200 run target. Iyer faced a frustrating day which resulted in his second consecutive IPL match where he violated a major league rule.

The Punjab Kings needed almost two hours to finish their bowling intervals according to people who do not know this information. The match began at 7:30 pm IST and the first innings ended at 9:30 pm. The umpire started the process of bringing an additional fielder into the circle after the 18th over ended.

Iyer will face another penalty because Punjab maintains a slow over-rate which causes the BCCI to suspend PBKS captain Iyer for his second consecutive violation. The right-handed batter had already broken the same rule in the team’s opening game against Gujarat Titans.

The IPL imposed a fine on Iyer after the GT vs PBKS match because the official league statement announced his penalty. He was charged ₹12 lakh after his team failed to maintain the required over-rate during that match.

Iyer would have received a suspension penalty if this incident occurred a few years ago. Current rules mandate that a team faces a ₹24 lakh fine after committing two consecutive slow over-rate violations. The official confirmation will follow one day after the CSK vs PBKS match.

As per the updated IPL regulations, a captain faces a ₹24 lakh fine for a second over-rate violation in the same season. The rules of the system establish specific penalties which apply when someone commits multiple violations.

The current system allows the bowling captain to receive fines and in-game restrictions while permitting him to continue playing during slow over-rate violations. Iyer will remain eligible to participate in all upcoming matches.

The IPL 2025 season will implement strict fines and on-field penalties for slow over-rate offences while maintaining zero suspension penalties. The first offence by captains results in a fine of ₹12 lakh which increases to ₹24 lakh for the second offence and ₹30 lakh for any subsequent violation. The remaining overs of the match permit teams to use only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle.

Shreyas Iyer has not created a major effect in IPL 2026 during the ongoing season. Iyer scored 18 runs from 11 balls in the opening match against Gujarat Titans. His performance during the game was impacted because of an injury he sustained during the match.

Iyer suffered a hand injury which caused him to experience extreme discomfort. The right-hander reached full recovery before the CSK match despite initial doubts about his game availability.
