New Delhi: Whatever Delhi Capitals plotted to beat Mumbai Indians, all of them came off in a six-wicket win on Saturday, including picking Sameer Rizvi as Impact Sub for which the home team’s think-tank could hope for a hat-tip.

They identified that the Feroz Shah Kotla track was a slow track where free-flowing batting would not be conducive if bowlers don’t spray their deliveries around, unlike the belters that have been on offer in the first round of the tournament’s matches.

And after winning the toss put up a disciplined bowling effort that frustrated Mumbai to 162 for six, saw Rizvi make an impact the way they wanted with a match-defining 90 (51 balls) to enable Delhi to win with 11 balls to spare.

At 42 for two, Delhi were exactly at the position Mumbai (41/2) were after completion of the powerplay overs, after which Rizvi took matters in his hands with seven boundaries and seven sixes.

“It was a pretty slow wicket. Got to get in, bide your time and then play shots,” Rohit Sharma said at the mid-innings break on the nature of the pitch.

Rizvi might have paid heed to it as he initially took a few deliveries to adjust to the wicket’s pace before unleashing his power-packed hitting ability.

But once Delhi had taken the setback of being reduced to seven for two inside two overs with a 66-run third wicket stand between Rizvi and Pathum Nissanka (44 off 30), they were on their way.

Nissanka couldn’t add much after being dropped on 41 by Mana Dhir off Cobin Bosch in the ninth over but by then Rizvi had got a hang of how to go about the chase.

He brought up his half century off 31 balls with a six in the 12th over and then thrashed Bosch to two boundaries and as many sixes for a 20-run over, the most expensive of the match.

Rizvi looked well on course for a hundred but fell short in the 17th over, with victory in sight for Delhi, who have now won both their opening two matches while Mumbai, for whom skipper Hardik Pandya was absent with illness, lost after winning their first match.

Brief Scores:

Mumbai Indians: 162 for 6 in 20 overs. (Suryakumar Yadav 51, Rohit Sharma 35, Naman Dhir 28; Mukesh Kumar 2/26).

Delhi Capitals: 164 for 4 in 18.1 overs. (Sameer Rizvi 90, Pathum Nissanka 44; Deepak Chahar 1/20).
