Mangaluru: The Principal District and Sessions Court has sentenced T.P. Farooq (50), a resident of Ansari Cross Road in the city's Bunder area, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 50,000 after being found guilty of cannabis smuggling and sales. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two months of simple imprisonment.


Judge Basavaraj of the Principal District and Sessions Court had convicted Farooq on March 9. The quantum of punishment was announced on April 4. Public Prosecutor Judith Olga Margaret Crasta represented the state.


The second accused in the case, Sagar Singh, has absconded after obtaining bail.
