Punjab’s flagship Chief Minister Sehat Yojana is emerging as an important pillar of health protection, providing a coverage of Rs 10 lakh per family and enabling timely treatment, reducing the financial burden during sudden medical emergencies. As many diseases such as heart attack, cancer and birth- complications can strike at any time, the Punjab Government’s approach is focused on bridging the gap between medical need and affordable treatment through large-scale public health interventions.
Diseases such as heart attack, cancer and birth complications can strike without warning, causing sudden severe symptoms and requiring immediate medical attention to prevent serious complications. This suggests that such health conditions often develop insidiously and strike without warning, leaving little time for decision making. This growing concern in Punjab is being addressed through financial preparedness, with government-backed initiatives like the Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana aimed at bridging the gap between medical need and affordable treatment.
According to the Health and Family Welfare Department of the Punjab Government, this scheme, run under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, provides free treatment up to Rs 10 lakh per year to every family. The scheme covers treatment for more than 2,300 diseases in both government and private hospitals.
World health statistics highlight the hidden origins of major and serious diseases, highlighting the need to take timely decisions. According to the World Health Organization, diseases such as heart disease, cancer, diabetes and respiratory problems cause about 75 percent of deaths worldwide each year, and many victims do not even know they are at risk. Dr. Isha Arora, Medical Officer of Medicine, Mohali District Hospital, said that by the time patients come to us, the disease has often progressed to the next stage.
Medical experts emphasize that when an emergency occurs, time becomes the most important factor. According to the American Heart Association, a delay of even a few minutes in treating a heart attack or stroke can cause permanent damage and even kill. Doctors say that patients generally feel hesitant at such moments. Dr. Isha Arora said that families often start considering the cost even before the treatment starts and this delay can be dangerous. In this context, financial security schemes like Mukhyamantri Sehat Yojana are expected to play a transformative role.
The scheme has received a huge boost across Punjab from coverage to actual care delivery. Officials say that more than 33 lakh families have been enrolled under the scheme, in which lakhs of patients have been admitted to hospitals, especially for the treatment of serious diseases like dialysis, cancer and heart. According to the State Health Agency of Punjab, more than 33 lakh beneficiaries have been successfully registered under the scheme and 1,98,793 free treatments have been approved, which amounts to approximately Rs 3,30,01,32,533. Out of this total amount, Rs 59,34,18,468 has already been distributed to the hospitals. People of all age groups, especially from children to the elderly, have benefited from this scheme, in which treatment for serious diseases like heart surgery and cancer care is being provided.
