When we consume excessive protein supplements, the kidneys have to work harder to process it, which is called hyperfiltration. This may be normal for a healthy person, but taking more supplements than necessary for a long period of time can increase the stress on the kidneys. Protein intake is essential during bodybuilding, but its excess has a negative effect on the kidneys.
According to Dr. Parvez, when we consume protein, it is digested in the body and converted into amino acids. After this, the body converts the remaining amino acids into ammonia. Ammonia is highly toxic to our body and is excreted through the kidneys. Consuming excess protein increases ammonia levels, which puts more pressure on the kidneys. This condition can be even more dangerous for people who have only one kidney or who suffer from chronic kidney disease.
According to Nephrologist Dr. Shafiq Cheema, taking excessive protein supplements can cause many health problems.
Nephrotic syndrome – Consuming excess protein leads to the release of protein through urine, which can cause swelling in the legs and increase cholesterol levels.
weight gain – Consuming more protein than required can increase weight.
Indigestion and constipation – Consuming excess protein can cause digestive problems and constipation.
According to Dr. Shafiq Cheema, a person should consume protein according to his body weight. For example, if a person weighs 60 kg, he should consume about 60 grams of protein daily.
