Synopsis

Government e-Marketplace, GeM, saw transactions worth over Rs 5 lakh crore in fiscal 2025-26. This marks a slight decrease from the prior year. A key factor was reduced participation from the coal ministry. GeM has introduced new features like multi-currency bidding and global tender inquiries. Over 11 lakh micro and small enterprises registered on the platform received substantial orders.

Public procurement platform Government e-Marketplace (GeM) facilitated transactions worth Rs 5.03 lakh crore in 2025-26, down 7.4% from the previous fiscal, a senior official said on Monday.

GeM facilitated transactions worth Rs 5.43 lakh crore in 2024-25.

GeM CEO Mihir Kumar said the decline in growth can be attributed to a reduced contribution from the coal ministry, whose share in total sales fell from 34% to 20 per cent in 2025-26 (Rs 1,02,219 crore).

Coal India Ltd bought goods and services worth Rs 82,285 crore through the platform in 2025-26.

"The GeM achieved a cumulative Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) of Rs 18.4 lakh crore, including crossing Rs 5 lakh crore GMV in 2025- 26," Kumar told reporters here.

He also said that the platform has included several new functionalities to enhance its efficiency such as rate contract and global tender enquiry (GTE).

"The platform has now been upgraded to support multi-currency bidding and participation from international sellers," he said.

The GTE functionality will help companies of certain free trade agreement partners of India to participate in global tenders of the Indian government departments, and entities with conditions. India has opened government procurement with conditions under trade pact with the UAE and the UK.

Ministries of coal, defence, petroleum and natural gas, power, finance, and steel were among the major procurers from GeM in 2025-26. The major CPSE buyers included Coal India, NTPC, NLC India, IOC Ltd, SAIL and ONGC.

Kumar said that more than 11 lakh MSEs (micro and small enterprises) are registered on the platform and they received over 51 lakh orders worth Rs 2.36 lakh crore during 2025-26.

Further over 2.1 lakh women-led MSEs are registered on the portal and have received orders exceeding Rs 28,000 crore, registering about 28% growth.
