Dhaka: The Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested former Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury from her residence in Dhanmondi early on Tuesday.
The development was confirmed by DB chief Shafiqul Islam, who told The Daily Star, “She has been taken to the DB office.”
The Detective Branch has not yet disclosed the specific case under which Chaudhury has been arrested. Further details are expected.
Her arrest comes amid an ongoing crackdown on leaders linked to the former ruling party following recent political developments in the country.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, multiple cases have been registered against party leaders across Bangladesh.
On August 27, 2024, a case was filed against Chaudhury in connection with the death of a jeweller, Muslim Uddin, in Rangpur during the July uprising. The complaint named 17 individuals. Former Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi was also named.
The case was filed by Dilruba Akter, the victim’s wife, at the Metropolitan Kotwali Cognisance Court in Rangpur. Investigators are currently reviewing the sequence of events and examining the alleged involvement of those named in the complaint.
Officials have not confirmed whether Chaudhury’s arrest is linked to this case or to any other ongoing investigation.
This is a developing story.
