Jajpur: A 24-year-old youth died on Tuesday after being critically injured in a shooting incident the previous in Odisha’s Jajpur town.

The deceased has been identified as Soumya Ranjan Samal, a resident of Kuansarpur village, who was engaged in the poultry business.

According to sources, the incident occurred around 11.30 pm near Kalimegha area under Jajpur Town police limits. Unidentified assailants on a motorcycle allegedly opened fire on him close to the residence of former MLA Pranab Prakash Das while Samal was returning home. He was hit in the stomach and was initially rushed to the district Headquarters Hospital. He was later shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack due to the severity of his condition but he succumbed during treatment.

Samal along with wife was staying on rent in the town. Locals have expressed shock over the incident.

Meanwhile, police have cordoned off the spot, and a scientific team has begun a detailed probe at the crime scene. While efforts are underway to identify and nab the assailants, the motive behind the attack is yet to be ascertained.
