Dehradun: The weather in Uttarakhand has changed once again. From the high Himalayan shrines to the plains, continuous rain and snowfall have brought severe cold back in April. The sudden change has disrupted normal life and raised concerns for farmers.
On Tuesday, Dehradun witnessed cloudy skies since morning. Light drizzle continued through the day, but by evening heavy rain accompanied by strong winds lashed the city. The showers lasted late into the night, leading to a sharp drop in temperature. According to the Meteorological Department, the maximum temperature in Dehradun fell by nearly six degrees Celsius.
Light to moderate snowfall was recorded at Kedarnath and Badrinath shrines, while lower regions reported rain and hailstorms. The cold winds have made people feel winter-like chill in April, an unusual occurrence for this time of year.
The Meteorological Department has warned that the weather will remain rough today as well. Thunderstorms and showers are expected in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, and Udham Singh Nagar districts. Officials said the change is due to the activation of a western disturbance, which is likely to keep the weather unstable for the next few days.
Unseasonal rains and hailstorms have increased worries for farmers. Wheat crops are ripe and harvesting is underway in many areas. Strong winds and hail can damage standing crops, leading to losses. Horticulture is also expected to be affected, with fruit orchards vulnerable to the sudden cold and rain.
Mountainous regions have been experiencing intermittent rain and snowfall for the past three days. This unusual April weather has disrupted daily life, with roads becoming slippery and travel plans being delayed. Residents in hill districts are reporting difficulties in routine activities due to the sudden chill.
According to the Director of the Meteorological Center, the current weather pattern is the result of a western disturbance. Such systems often bring rain, snow, and hail to the Himalayan region. The department has advised people to remain cautious, especially in high-altitude areas where snowfall can make conditions dangerous.
The sudden return of cold weather has surprised residents and tourists alike. While some are enjoying the unexpected chill, farmers and daily wage workers are worried about its impact on crops and livelihoods. With the Ardh Kumbh preparations underway in Haridwar and pilgrim season approaching in the hills, officials are keeping a close watch on the situation.
