New Delhi: A shocking incident has come to light from Indore, where a toddler had to undergo surgery following an unusual accident.

The mishap happened when a fish accidentally jumped into the child’s throat as the elder siblings were carrying out a routine aquarium cleaning session. What followed was a medical emergency for the family.

After a surgery, the doctors succeeded in removing the fish from the one-year-old boy, according to officials.

What exactly happened

It all started on April 3 when the elder siblings of the boy were cleaning the aquarium in their house. They were playing with ornamental fish which they collected in a net. As they were doing so, one of the fish suddenly leapt out and landed in the toddler’s open mouth as he was laughing watching the activity.

As per a PTI report, the family were alarmed and immediately took the child to Government Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH) for urgent medical care.

Dr Yamini Gupta, Head of the ENT department at MYH, reportedly said the almost three-inch fish was alive and flapping vigorously as it was stuck in his throat. “It caused injuries, and blood mixed with saliva was coming out. The child had anxiety, restlessness and breathing difficulty.”

What did the doctors do

As the situation was serious, the doctors took the decision of performing an emergency surgery. A medical team of six members carried out a half-hour “complex procedure” to remove the stuck fish from the child’s throat. The fish had died by the time it was taken out.

The medical team kept the child under observation for some days after the complicated operation. Later, he was discharged from the hospital in a stable state. The child is healthy now, according to sources.

Gupta said: “This is the first case in central India where a fish stuck in a one-year-old’s throat has been removed through surgery.”
