A massive fire broke out inside Terminal 1B at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in the Vile Parle area on Thursday, 9 April 2026, shortly after 6 pm, triggering an immediate emergency response from the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police and airport authorities. The blaze was reported in cable trays and switch boxes on the ground floor, and officials confirmed that the fire has since been brought under control, with the incident currently confined to the ground level of the terminal. No casualties have been reported so far, though thick smoke was seen billowing inside the terminal, as captured in multiple videos circulating on social media.

Airport staff and security teams evacuated passengers from the affected area, and flight operations were monitored closely to avoid disruption while fire tenders sprayed water and foam to fully extinguish the flames. The chief fire officer of the Mumbai Fire Brigade told open‑source channels that the exact cause of the blaze is still under investigation. Authorities have temporarily cordoned off the zone and technical teams are now assessing damage to wiring and power infrastructure in the terminal area.

The incident comes less than two months after a similar fire at a hotel in the Andheri area near the airport, where the blaze was confined to an air‑conditioning unit and exhaust ducting on the terrace of a multi‑storey building. In that earlier case, civic officials reported that about 70–80 people were stranded across floors and later rescued safely via staircases, with no injuries.
