CD Gopinath Passes Away: Former Indian cricketer CD Gopinath passed away at the age of 96. He breathed his last at his daughter’s house in Adyar, Chennai. With his demise, a chapter of a golden era of Indian cricket also ended.


Historical face of Indian cricket


CD Gopinath was one of the oldest players of the Indian team and was the last surviving member of the team that was part of the country’s first Test victory. Earlier, after the death of Dutta Gaikwad in 2024, he was the last member of this historic team.

Tamil Nadu Cricket Association expressed deep condolences on his demise. The association described him as a true pioneer of Indian cricket and said that his legacy will always live in the history of the game.


Career beginning and test debut


Born on 1 March 1930 in Chennai, Gopinath made his mark by performing brilliantly in domestic cricket. After this he got a chance in the Indian team. He made his Test debut against England in 1951–52 and impressed by scoring an unbeaten half-century in his very first match. In the same series, he also played an excellent innings at the Brabourne Stadium.


Important contribution in historic victory


Gopinath was a part of India’s first Test win, which came in Chennai. England Was registered against. In this match, he played an important inning of 35 runs and also took an important catch of Brian Statham on the ball of Vinoo Mankad. In that match, Mankad played a big role in the team’s victory by taking a total of 12 wickets.


Career statistics and contributions


In his Test career, CD Gopinath scored 242 runs in 8 matches at an average of 22, which included one half-century. Apart from this he also took one wicket. In first class cricket, he scored 4259 runs in 83 matches, which included 9 centuries, and also took 14 wickets in his name.



Even after his retirement from sports, Gopinath remained associated with cricket. He captained the Madras team and later became the national selector and chairman of the selection committee. During the 1979 tour of England he Indian team Played the role of manager. His contribution to Indian cricket will always be remembered and his name will be remembered with respect in history.
