The statistics of the first 14 matches of the Indian Premier League 2026 (IPL 2026) are pointing towards an interesting trend. Performance in the powerplay (first 6 overs) is playing a big role in deciding the outcome of the match, especially for the teams who are chasing the target. Most of the matches played so far have been won by the team which made a strong start in the powerplay during the chase.

A look at the data clearly shows that the chasing teams have made aggressive starts an important part of their strategy. Chasing teams won 8 out of 14 matches and in most of these the powerplay score was better than or equal to the opponent’s score. 5 matches were won by the teams batting first. One match was washed out due to rain.

Powerplay trends of 14 matches

  • Talking about Match 1, 2 and 3, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) won easily by scoring 70+ runs in the powerplay. Similarly, in matches 4, 7, and 10, the chasing teams won by scoring fast runs in the powerplay. This trend shows that in the second innings, if the team scores 60-70 runs in the first 6 overs and also saves wickets, then the chances of victory increase significantly.

  • Not only scoring runs, but saving wickets is also proving to be equally important. For example, in Match 2, MI scored 80/0, while in Match 3, RR scored 74/0 and almost turned the match in their favor in the powerplay itself. On the contrary, the pressure increased where chase teams lost early wickets. However, in some cases, such as in matches 5 and 8, teams came back and won despite low scores.

  • In some matches, despite a good start in the first innings, victory is not guaranteed. In matches 6, 9, 13, and 14, teams batting first played strong powerplays and ultimately won the matches but such cases are rare. Especially in matches 1, 2 and 3, despite the score being 40-50 in the first innings, the opposition teams played better powerplay and snatched the match. It is clear from this that only a good start is not enough, but it is also important to keep the opposition team under pressure during the chase.
