It’s not easy to be one of the most popular faces of a franchise, if not the league. WNBA star Sophie Cunningham does not hesitate to enjoy her fandom, but sometimes it comes with a huge cost, or at least, horrible experiences. Cunningham is speaking with unusual honesty about life around the game. The former Indiana Fever guard did not hesitate when asked about her most memorable fan moments. Some of them, she admitted, have crossed a line that players should never have to manage.
Her comments arrive at a time when the WNBA’s growth is bringing fresh energy and new eyes to the league. That rise has created stronger connections with fans, but it has also introduced uncomfortable situations that players are learning to navigate.
Sophie Cunningham reveals encounters with creepy old men
During an interview with GQ Sports, Sophie Cunningham was direct about the reality behind the scenes. When asked about her wildest fan interactions, she did not hide the truth.
"I get a lot of old, creepy men, so that would be the extreme not so good experiences," Cunningham said.
As the league’s profile continues to grow, so does the visibility of its players. Such visibility can be powerful, but it also demands clearer boundaries, something Cunningham’s experience highlights without needing much explanation.
Still, she did not let those moments define her view of the job. There was a noticeable shift when she spoke about the fans who keep her grounded.
"But the great experiences are all the little boys and girls who are just so excited and new to the WNBA and want to be like us," she said. "Inspiring them is probably like the most fulfilling thing you can do."
That contrast says a lot. The same platform that invites discomfort also creates connection.
Sophie Cunningham joins WNBA coverage amid free agency
Away from those interactions, Cunningham’s career is entering a different phase. She is currently navigating unrestricted free agency for the first time, with her future still open. After a 2025 season where she averaged 8.6 points and provided steady minutes before a knee injury, her next step carries weight.
At the same time, she is expanding her presence beyond the court. Cunningham recently confirmed she will be part of USA Network’s WNBA studio coverage , adding a new layer to her role in the sport.
"I’m back baby and with a NEW SQUAAAAD!! I’m joining the @usasports team throughout the year to contribute to studio coverage of @wnba games on @usanetwork," she posted.
Her next team is still undecided. A return to Indiana remains possible, but nothing is locked in.
