Indian tennis star Zeel Desai expressed a blend of nerves and excitement as she prepared for her singles debut in the Billie Jean King Cup. This match took place during India's Asia/Oceania Group I round-robin tie against Mongolia on Friday at the Delhi Lawn Tennis Authority Complex. Following her match, she felt relieved to have emerged victorious.
In a dominant display, India triumphed over Mongolia with a 3-0 victory in their Billie Jean King Cup 2026 round-robin match. Both Zeel Desai and Sahaja Yamalapalli secured wins with identical scores of 6-0, 6-0. Additionally, Vaishnavi Adkar and Rutuja Bhosale teamed up in doubles, winning their match 6-1, 6-0, completing the clean sweep.
After her match against Mongolia's Anu-Vjin Gantor, Zeel shared her feelings with the media. She admitted to experiencing a mix of nerves and excitement before stepping onto the court. The team adhered to their strategic plan, which contributed to her impressive 6-0, 6-0 victory. Zeel expressed her joy over the result and appreciated the enthusiastic crowd support at the venue. "I was nervous yet excited before the match. We followed our strategies, and I’m thrilled with the outcome. The cheering from the crowd was incredible," she remarked.
Despite their strong performance against Mongolia, India had faced a setback the day before, losing 0-3 to Indonesia. Although Zeel did not compete in that match, she acknowledged Indonesia's strength and noted that the Indian team gave their best effort despite the defeat. She mentioned that the team entered the Mongolia match with confidence and set achievable goals, which they successfully met. "Indonesia is a formidable team, but we were confident going into today's match and pleased to achieve our targets," Zeel stated.
India's next challenge will be against the Republic of Korea on Saturday.
