According to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) of the Government of India, a temperature of 24 degrees Celsius is considered the most ideal temperature for running AC. As per the rules applicable from 1 January 2020, the default temperature of all air conditioners with BEE star rating is set to 24°C. This temperature is not only comfortable for the body, but also reduces electricity consumption to a great extent.

If you run the AC at 24°C, the room remains comfortably cool and doesn’t put too much strain on the machine. Conversely, running the AC at very low temperatures forces the compressor to work harder, which increases power consumption. This is the reason why experts also consider 24°C to be the most balanced and economical temperature.

It is considered best to keep the AC temperature at 24 degrees while sleeping. Many people run AC at 18-20 degrees at night, but this neither provides quick cooling nor improves sleep. Rather, this increases the electricity bill rapidly. If the temperature is kept close to the outside weather, the AC works more efficiently.

If you run a fan along with the AC, the cold air spreads quickly throughout the room. This makes one feel cooler even at lower temperatures. Apart from this, if there is high humidity in the room then it is beneficial to use a dehumidifier. This keeps the air dry and feels cooler, which reduces the load on the AC.
