Riyan Parag, the captain of Rajasthan Royals (RR), is under intense scrutiny following a disappointing 57-run loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad during their IPL 2026 match at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on April 13.
Chasing a target of 217 runs, RR was bowled out for 159 in just 19 overs, marking the end of their four-match winning streak. The team's batting lineup crumbled early, with Praful Hinge (4/34) and Sakib Hussain (4/24) wreaking havoc during the powerplay, leaving RR at a shocking 9/5 within three overs. However, a partnership of 118 runs between Donovan Ferreira (69) and Ravindra Jadeja (45) provided a brief revival for the innings.
The defeat has raised serious questions about Parag's leadership. Although RR secured early breakthroughs by dismissing Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, they failed to maintain the momentum, allowing SRH's middle order to stabilize and set a formidable total.
Ishan Kishan's impressive 91 runs and his significant 88-run partnership with Heinrich Klaasen (40) were pivotal in building SRH's score. Contributions from Nitish Kumar Reddy (28) and Salil Arora (24*) in the death overs helped SRH easily surpass the 200-run mark.
Moreover, the decision to underutilize Ravindra Jadeja has sparked further criticism of Parag's captaincy. Despite Kishan and Klaasen's dominance, Parag did not bring Jadeja into the attack, leaving many puzzled.
In addition to captaincy issues, Parag's batting performance has been inconsistent, with a mere four runs scored during the collapse. Coming in at a precarious 1/3, he failed to stabilize the innings, adding to the pressure on the middle order.
Former Indian opener and BCCI chief selector Kris Srikkanth did not hold back in his critique of Parag's performance. On his YouTube channel, he expressed disappointment over Parag's lack of contribution and questioned his decision-making regarding Jadeja's bowling.
"He's only there for style. As usual, he did nothing with the bat and spoke at the post-match presentation. He's just there for style and does nothing else," Srikkanth remarked.
"He doesn't bowl Jadeja an over and then offers an explanation that a left-hander was playing. Is there some rule that a left-arm spinner can't bowl to a left-hander? It's absurd," he added.
Srikkanth also criticized RR's bowling performance, highlighting that the combined efforts of Tushar Deshpande, Sandeep Sharma, and Ravi Bishnoi allowed SRH to dominate the match.
"The 11 overs bowled by Deshpande, Sharma, and Bishnoi went for 142 runs. That's where the match was lost," he stated.
"Wherever Sandeep Sharma bowled, they smashed him, and Deshpande was a total failure. RR needs to rethink their bowling strategy; otherwise, they will continue to face heavy defeats."
Following this setback against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the Rajasthan Royals are eager to bounce back as they prepare to face the Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, April 19.
