Just when we thought the traditional Banarasi silhouette had said everything it needed to, Bollywood actresses Sanya Malhotra walked in and gave us a completely fresh script. Banarasi fabric, which is known for its rich zari and timeless drapes, has long been associated with ethnic ensembles.

It is something which you preserve, and for years, Banarasi’s heritage look has been known for its grace and sophistication. However, Sanya didn’t get that memo, as she took the classic silhouette and turned the script into a modern look that felt more like runway than ritual. Where the ensemble looked refreshing and disruptive, it did not sit well with many fashiongoers.

Sanya wore the Arsema Woven Benarais Jacket set by Anita Dongre, drenched in rich gold weaves, and was inspired by Banarasi textiles. The structured jacket came with a deep neckline, cinched waist detailing, and intricate motif placement, which looked cultured yet playful. She teamed the jacket with a matching shirt, a mini skirt made from the same fabric, and a statement blue bow attached at the centre of her blazer.
