Holidaymakers have been hit by flight cancellations at three UK airports in the midst of an ongoing strike. Pilots at Lufthansa, represented by the Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) union, are striking on Thursday and Friday following the announcement of industrial action over a pensions dispute, while its low-cost subsidiary Eurowings is also striking today.
Numerous worldwide flights have already been cancelled today, with a number of UK airports hit by the disruption. Flights to and from Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports have been axed today. Three Lufthansa flights scheduled to arrive in Edinburgh from Frankfurt today have been cancelled, along with two outbound services.
One inbound and outbound Munich flight from the Scottish capital have also been axed. Flights from Frankfurt to Glasgow by the German airline have been cancelled.
At Manchester Airport, two inbound flights from Frankfurt and Munich have been cancelled, along with one outbound service to Munich and two outbound flights to Frankfurt.
Andreas Pinheiro, the union's president said: "The situation remains unchanged; there is absolutely no movement on the employers' side.
"For us, this is not about political power struggles or egos, but about sustainable solutions."
Lufthansa says they are trying to operate "as many flights as possible" but "flight cancellations are unavoidable".
A Lufthansa spokesperson said: "Lufthansa and Eurowings are working intensively to keep the impact on passengers as low as possible.
"We are trying to have as many flights as possible operated by other airlines within the Lufthansa Group and by partner airlines.
"However, despite these efforts, flight cancellations are unavoidable.
"Travelers who are affected by an irregularity will be informed accordingly, provided their contact details are stored in the booking.
"We ask passengers to check the status of their flight before setting out on their journey.
"We apologize for the inconvenience caused by the disproportionate and very short-notice strike announcement."
The airline says flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Air Dolomiti, Discover Airlines, Edelweiss and Lufthansa City Airlines will not be affected by the strike.
