A pretty chocolate box village has been named one of the best places to live in the UK. Amberley is a picturesque, historic village in West Sussex, situated at the foot of the South Downs,
It is four miles north of Arundel, with the neighbouring villages of Storrington and West Chiltington. The village is noted for its chocolate box flint-walled thatched cottages, with a house named "The Thatched House" that is one of the village's few non-thatched homes. There are over 70 listed buildings in the village, including 17th-century timber-framed houses. It is frequently cited as one of the best places to live in the UK, with Muddy Stilettos naming it a top spot in Sussex and Rightmove calling it a "pearl" of the county. Hello Sussex said that the "sleepy atmosphere" could be deceiving, as it is the "perfect day out" and it is easy to feel as though you've "slipped back in time".
One of the attractions is Amberley Working Museum, an open-air industrial heritage museum located within historic chalk quarries. Chalk was extracted and processed into lime on site for more than 100 years, and the museum still houses several of its original lime kilns.
Exhibitions at the museum feature a diverse range of industrial and local heritage collections, including narrow-gauge railways, local bus services, and a multitude of light and rural industrial subjects.
Another site is Amberley Castle, which dates back to the 12th century. The manor house was a fortress for the bishops of Chichester, but is now a privately-owned luxury hotel. Next to it is the Norman St Michael's Church.
To the north of the village is the tidal plain of the River Arun, known as Amberley Wild Brooks. The wetland is a Site of Special Scientific Interest which floods in winter and is known for its wildfowl.
An impressive river bridge with superb views of the area is an ideal starting place for leisurely walks through the Wild Brooks. There are lots of trails in the area to enjoy.
Amberley has a railway station on the Arun Valley Line, with regular services to Bognor Regis, Portsmouth and London.
