Maharashtra news: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has busted a major smuggling racket at Nhava Sheva port in Mumbai. Here 132 containers being brought in the name of ‘Toor Dal’ were seized, whose value in the international market is said to be around Rs 139 crore.
DRI had already received input that some importers were smuggling banned goods. The containers were stopped on this basis. In the papers he was described as ‘Toor Dal’, but during investigation the whole story was revealed.
When officials examined the containers, they found a huge quantity of contraband, about 2,710 metric tonnes of watermelon seeds (from Tanzania and Sudan), about 319 metric tonnes of green peas (from Canada).
The government has imposed strict restrictions on these items to protect domestic farmers from cheap imports. Import of watermelon seeds is completely banned after June 2024, import of green peas has been limited with strict conditions.
Maharashtra news: In this entire case, DRI has arrested the main accused and the proprietor of the importing firm on April 19. The agency says that further action will be taken against such smuggling which harms the economic interests of the country. Too Strict action will continue.
