Former US ambassador Peter Mandelson was filmed storming off camera as an ITV reporter grilled him about the impact of his time in government. The former Labour minister was sacked last year, just nine months into the Washington DC posting, after further details of his association with the paedophile financier Jeffrey Epstein emerged. On Monday (April 20), Starmer battled to save his job in a Commons showdown over his vetting process, insisting red flags were not disclosed by the Foreign Office.
The Labour leader blamed officials for not passing this information to him, even as he told MPs that "full due process" was being followed. On Tuesday (April 21), Mandelson was spotted walking his dog by ITV News, which grilled him about his role in the downfall of the Labour government.
The 72-year-old remained silent as he returned to his family home while broadcaster Shehad Khan peppered him with questions about the future for Starmer. He asked: "A lot of people have lost their jobs because of your appointment. Do you have sympathy for that?"
The presenter went on: "The Prime Minister says it was a mistake to appoint you. Do you think he's the right person to be in Number 10? So far, you, Olly Robbins and Morgan McSweeney have all lost jobs. Do you think the Prime Minister should carry on in Number 10?" he concluded. It didn't take long before the video hit social media, with viewers sharing their disappointment at his silence online.
One user penned: "Is that a smirk I see? [red angry emoji] Dreadful man!" as another echoed: "Dreadful man, keep it up ITV." Meanwhile, others called out the Prime Minister for appointing Mandelson in the first place.
One person argued: "All Starmer's fault at the end of the day. Should never have appointed him." Another agreed: "Tbf it wasn't Mandelson's responsibility that Starmer illegally appointed him as ambassador to the USA and then continuously lied about it [upside down smiley emoji]."
It comes after the Secretary of State for Energy Security, Ed Miliband, was quizzed on Good Morning Britain about the Mandelson vetting scandal. He confessed: "You're right, Susanna, Peter Mandelson should not have been appointed." Miliband's comments shocked GMB viewers, with some even claiming the Labour politician had "given up" on Starmer.
Taking to X, one person said: "Ed Miliband utterly defeated by Susanna Reid this morning," as another echoed: "Ed Miliband clearly given up on Kier." A third claimed: "Ed Miliband distancing himself from the PM. Usually, it's the fake-friendly Kier this, Keir that, from all the toadies, but today it's very much just Keir Starmer! Save your own skin, Ed, carry on agreeing with everything Susanna and Ed Balls are saying!"
