MS Dhoni was back in action, batting in the nets at Wankhede Stadium as the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) gear up for their match against the Mumbai Indians (MI). This is the most exciting news CSK fans have heard in weeks! After sitting out six matches due to a calf injury, Dhoni spent nearly an hour training, facing fast bowlers and moving around without any visible discomfort. This definitely raises the question: Is he finally ready to make his comeback?

The short answer is not just yet, but for the first time this season, we have something solid to hold onto. He had traveled to Hyderabad for the last CSK match but didn’t train with this level of intensity. His involvement in batting and wicket-keeping drills suggests he’s getting closer to being match-ready.

Reports from Wankhede indicate that MS Dhoni batted for about 30 minutes, taking on bowlers like Matt Henry and Jamie Overton. More importantly, he seemed unrestricted in his movements, which had been a major concern since his pre-season injury. He also kept wickets for around half an hour, which is fantastic news for CSK.

That said, there’s still a difference between looking good in the nets and being ready for a real game. Dhoni has already missed six matches this season, so CSK will need to ease him back into the lineup gradually.

Why CSK May Not Rush MS Dhoni’s Return

The management has been cautious with Dhoni from the very beginning, and there’s a good reason for that. At 44, recovery times are a different ball game, and a calf injury is definitely not something to take lightly, especially for a player who thrives on quick bursts of energy late in the innings.

Last season, Dhoni faced just over 11.5 balls per innings. This year, he was expected to take on a similar role, focusing on batting during the death overs. That kind of role demands quick running between the wickets. Right now, CSK isn’t entirely convinced he can handle that at the intensity of a match.

Batting coach Michael Hussey recently mentioned that there’s still no set timeline for his return, which gives you an idea of the current situation behind the scenes. The priority seems to be getting him back to full fitness rather than rushing him back into action. CSK’s season hasn’t exactly gone as planned so far.

With only two wins in six matches, they find themselves in the lower half of the table, and injuries have only added to their troubles. Khaleel Ahmed is already out, Nathan Ellis had to be replaced, and now Spencer Johnson has been brought in to fill that void.
