Who was Jeeva Mahale?

Jeeva Mahale was a very important and brave person in the history of the Maratha Empire. He was the most loyal soldier and bodyguard of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He saved Shivaji Maharaj’s life from danger many times. The most famous incident is of 10 November 1659. That day, Shivaji Maharaj met Bijapur’s commander Afzal Khan under Pratapgarh Fort. Afzal Khan tried to kill Shivaji Maharaj. At that very moment, Jeeva Mahale showed great bravery and protected Shivaji Maharaj with his sword fighting skills. Because of this bravery, a famous saying is still prevalent in Maharashtra: ‘Hota Jeeva Manhun Vachala Shiva’ i.e. Shiva’s life was saved because of Jeeva.

Jeeva Mahale died in 1709. A memorial has been built in his memory at a place named Ambawade near Bhor in Pune district of Maharashtra. Even today people remember his bravery and his unwavering loyalty towards Shivaji Maharaj.
