Business Desk – Share Market Crash: Amidst crude oil prices crossing $100 per barrel, selling by both domestic and foreign investors and selling pressure in most of the global markets, the domestic stock market is also trading with a decline today. Domestic equity benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty 50 opened with a decline. Most of the sectoral Nifty indices are trading in negative territory today.

Selling pressure is clearly visible in mid-cap shares also. However, some buying is being seen in small-cap stocks. Overall, the total market capitalization of companies listed on BSE has reduced by Rs 2 lakh crore, which means that investors’ wealth has reduced by more than Rs 2 lakh crore.

Talking about equity benchmark indices, BSE Sensex is currently trading at 77,770.25, which is down 746.24 points (0.95%), while Nifty 50 is at 24,158.55. Which has fallen by 219.55 points (0.90%). In early trade, Nifty was down 243.30 points at 24,134.80, and Sensex was down 823.43 points.

2 lakh crore decline in investors’ wealth

Just one trading day earlier, on April 22, 2026, the total market capitalization of all the shares listed on BSE was Rs 4,69,36,824.29 crore. Today, on April 23, 2026, due to selling pressure, this figure has fallen to Rs 4,67,34,018.64 crore. This means that investors’ wealth has reduced by Rs 202,805.65 crore.

Only 5 Sensex stocks are in rise

Sensex includes 30 listed shares, out of which only five are currently trading with gains. Today the highest growth is being seen in HCLTech, PowerGrid and TCS.
