Greece has once again cemented its reputation as a global beach paradise after dominating Tripadvisor's 2026 Travellers' Choice Awards, with four of its Mediterranean gems ranked among the best in the world. Even more striking, three of those standout beaches are located on the same island, with two securing coveted spots in the global top three.
The latest rankings, based on millions of traveller reviews, revealed that many of the world's best beaches are on Crete, Greece's biggest and most populous island. Interestingly, the three award-winning beaches are not spread across the island but are largely concentrated on its western side, a region famed for some of the Mediterranean's most dramatic coastal scenery.
All located within the Chania region, this part of Crete is particularly known for its turquoise waters, pink-tinged sands in places and wild, unspoilt landscapes - making it a magnet for visitors seeking postcard-perfect views.
Topping this year's Tripadvisor ranking was Isla Pasion in Cozumel, Mexico.
The iconic Elafonissi Beach on Crete's southwest coast claimed second place globally. Known for its distinctive pink-tinged sands and clear turquoise waters, the beach was praised by Tripadvisor as "just one of those places you have to see to believe."
The travel platform highlighted its shallow lagoons as ideal for families, while deeper waters offer opportunities for swimming and snorkelling.
It also features a walkable sandbar, which connects to a small, protected island.
The main beach offers sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, with a few snack bars and toilets, but it is advised to bring your own supplies.
Third place went to Balos Lagoon, also on Crete, further cementing the island's reputation as a premier beach destination.
Balos Lagoon, found on Crete's northwest coast near Kissamos, is heralded for its turquoise waters, white sand and vibrant pinkish hues, also from crushed shells. Accessible via a rough dirt road or daily ferries from Kissamos, it offers shallow, warm waters perfect for swimming.
This beach is semi-organised, with a small kiosk for snacks, but limited options. Sunbeds and umbrellas are available for rent, but often fill up or can be costly, so bringing your own gear is advised.
Visitors are advised to wear sturdy shoes for the steep, rocky hike down to the shore, which usually takes between 20 and 30 minutes.
Two additional Greek beaches also made the top 15. Falassarna Beach ranked 11th, while Paleokastritsa Beach on the island of Corfu placed 14th.
Falassarna Beach, also located on the western coast near Kissamos is renowned for its wide, sandy shores and crystal-clear turquoise waters and is frequently ranked among Europe's best. It consists of five consecutive beaches, with the main Pachia Ammos known for its vibrant atmosphere and stunning, unobstructed sunsets.
The area offers organised sunbeds, water sports, and nearby tavernas, making it ideal for families and couples.
Paleokastritsa Beach, meanwhile, is a picturesque resort on Corfu's west coast, known for its six small sand-and-pebble coves, emerald waters and dramatic cliffs, topped by the 13th century Monastery of Theotokou. Often considered the most scenic spot in Corfu, it offers excellent snorkelling, boat trips to the Blue Caves, and numerous tavernas.
