Mikel Arteta has issued an update on the fitness status of Kai Havertz and Eberechi Eze following Saturday night's clash with Newcastle United. The Gunners returned to the top of the Premier League table with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle, with Eze the difference between the two sides.
The Englishman netted a stunning goal in the first half of the match, but his evening was cut short when he hobbled off with an injury just after the restart. It was the second injury-enforced change for Arteta, given Havertz had also been forced off during the opening 45 minutes.
Speaking to Match of the Day, the Arsenal manager said: "Both of them had to come off, I think it was small niggles. We don't know the extent of that. Probably tomorrow we will know more."
Eze offered his own assessment after full-time, telling Sky Sports: "I'm good. I came off for precaution. I didn't want to do anything. I will be okay."
It wasn't easy for Arsenal, who once again huffed and puffed at times during the match. On his side's performance, Arteta added: "Much better. We know what is at stake. The margins are really small. We started the game really well, scored a beautiful goal.
"I loved the personality of the players. We were so disciplined without the ball, we only conceded one chance with [Yoane] Wissa. We can miss chances but it is how the team reacts immediately and the effort that we put. We have to have something else to win games."
It's been a testing week for Arsenal following the defeat away to Manchester City, with the Spaniard saying: "We had a huge reset and I sensed a change in energy in the dressing room. We enjoyed what we had to do and now we play the Champions League against Atletico Madrid in the semi-final which is incredible."
It's onto the Champions League semi-final in the Spanish capital next, but Eze insisted the players aren't feeling the pressure. In his Sky Sports interview, the playmaker added: I don't think so, it is the necessary pressure to win and we know what is at stake and we have an opportunity to do something incredible.
"It is not negative. This is a beautiful position we are to achieve something that hasn't been done in a while. It is not a negative for me. "
